The endangered endemic palila is making its last stand in an area smaller than 25 square miles on the semi-arid upper slopes of Maunakea volcano on Hawaii island.
Participants on the Rainforest and Dryforest Birding Adventure look for that gold-and-gray honeycreeper, known for its beautiful song and reliance on the native mamane tree for food.
The tour also explores a lush forest on Maunaloa volcano, where the endangered akiapolaau lives.
Amakihi, elepaio and apapane might be spotted in both habitats.
Avid birder Rob Pacheco, Hawaii Forest & Trail’s president and founder, helped launch the Hawaii Island Festival of Birds and the Hawaii Island Coast to Coast Birding Trail.
